Candidate Filings for 2014 Election Season Start Monday

Posted: Updated:

There were a half dozen candidates waiting when Washoe County Registrar of Voters Luanne Cutler opened the office doors at 8am. Monday was the first of filing for the 2014 election season.

Most were sitting judges filing to continue in their current positions.

"Raising money for judges is in the best of worlds...unseemly. I don't like it; it puts you in a difficult position when attorneys appear in your court," says Judge Bridget Peck, Family Court Dept. 13.

District Court Judge Dept. 3 Jerry Polaha adds, "If we have an opponent, we gear up if we don't we continue on."

But it doesn't limit the paperwork.

"Fees are payable in cash and bring ID and we do the rest," says Cutler.

They all know it's just a part of the job.

"The best part is talking with people and face time with the people you're serving," says Family Court Judge Dept. 12 Frances Doherty.

And this group has worked together for years.

District Court Judge Dept. 10 Elliott Sattler adds, "it was like a judges meeting in there today everyone knows each other and everyone gets along."

"I've been very proud and privileged to serve in District 8 and I would be grateful to have the opportunity to continue to serve," says Stiglich.

Not a lot of opposition for the District Court seats.

And the one seat that's shaping up as a real race is for the Sparks Justice of the Peace where Susan Deriso has retired.

Today three people filed to fill it:

  • D.A. prosecutor Christian Wilson
  • Washoe County Sheriff's Deputy Brooke Keast
  • Sparks City Attorney Chet Adams

The judicial filings go for two weeks, then the rest of the candidate filings are in March.

The Primary Election is June 10th.
