DMV Outage Affects Driver Authorization Card Numbers

Posted: Updated:

DMV offices have been packed statewide after a new law allowing undocumented citizens to apply for driver's licenses took effect on Thursday.

Though offices were packed on Friday, because of a brief shutdown, officials don't have any concrete numbers on just how many people have received Driver Authorization Cards.

They do say that between 75%-80% of people applying for the cards have failed the written test which is much higher than officials anticipated.

An additional 18 DMV workers were hired to help process undocumented citizens applying for Driver Authorization Cards.

The DMV is shutting down its central computer system overnight to make repairs that have caused outages in recent days.
Officials say a water leak from an air conditioning system damaged servers and caused an outage on De. 29.
Another outage occurred Friday morning, disrupting operations at the DMV's 16 offices statewide.

Repairs and upgrades are planned Friday night, meaning the system will be down from 8 p.m. until around 2 a.m. Saturday. Officials say the agency's website, kiosks and vehicle identification database used for emissions testing will be unavailable during those hours.
