Storey County School Bus Drivers Learn Self-Defense

Posted: Updated:

Storey County school bus drivers had a day of professional training on Friday, but not the type you'd expect.

Some of the Storey County employees say they've gotten a little spooked by all the recent shootings and emergencies at schools across the country. So today, they learned some new skills to keep them safer and give them some peace of mind.

"Sometimes you get into a situation, and you're just not really sure what's going on. And it starts giving you these thoughts...what if something happens, what am I going to do, you know?" says driver trainer Miki Wood.

Apex Security Consulting Firm led the session going over techniques that pretty much anybody can do regardless of strength or age.

The bus drivers learned to read the situation, take the proper body stance and confront the person. They also learned basic disarming techniques and driving maneuvers that would make it difficult for an active shooter to hurt anyone.

"They will leave today with having everything we taught them in their tool box of protection, to navigate any threat that comes to them, whether it's an active shooter, home invasion, robbery, hostage situation..." says CEO Jeff May.

Storey County officials say they hope classes like this catch on to Nevada's other school districts as well.
