Candidate Filings for 2014 Election Season Start Monday

Posted: Updated:

The primary election is still six months away (with the general 11 months away), but the campaigning is just around the corner. In fact, Washoe County's Registrar of Voters Luanne Cutler is already preparing for the candidate filings to begin.

"We do have a lot of paperwork to get to and we've been cleaning up the lobby and I think we're ready for Monday," she says. Monday is when the filing opens for judicial candidates.

"And we think this will be a high interest year," she says. "All of the 15 District Judgeships are up for election in this cycle. Plus a Justice of the Peace position in Sparks is open due to a retirement."

Political science professor Fred Lokken agrees that this election will likely see more interest than a lot of local elections do in a non-presidential election year.

"Term limits will play a role," Lokken says. "In fact I think this could be one of those years when we see candidates coming out of the woodwork to run. It's a pivotal time when you have council members and even a mayor terming out. And this is a real opportunity for those have been considering running."

The Judicial filing is opening early this year because of a change in dates made by the last session of the legislature. That filing opens on Monday and will run for two weeks.

Other candidates can start filing in March. And all will need to show documentation of residency in the proper district and all filing fees need to be paid in cash.
