Storm Bring Snow, Freezing Temperatures, Kills at Least 11

Posted: Updated:

It's not just the snow that's making it difficult to get around today in much of the Northeast. Brisk winds are making sub-freezing temperatures feel even colder, and complicating travel by blowing snow around.

About 2,200 flights have been canceled nationwide today, according to the aviation tracking website FlightAware.com. Several delays on various airlines are being reported at Reno-Tahoe International Airport at the time of this writing, but airport representatives say call ahead to get the latest information on your flight.

Also, if you are picking someone up at an area airport, you're urged to call your specific airline to make sure it is still arriving.

The storm is now blamed for 11 deaths as it swept across the eastern half of the country.

One man clearing a sidewalk in front of a restaurant in Somerville, Mass., said the cold was worse than the snow. He said his ears were frozen.

Schools and offices are closed across the region today. Governors in New York and New Jersey declared states of emergency and urged residents to stay home.

But few power outages are reported today.

Temperatures in the Northeast are expected to rise above freezing over the weekend, before the arrival of another blast of frigid air that is already affecting the Midwest. A record low temperature was seen this morning in Green Bay, Wisconsin, where the mercury dipped to minus 18.  (AP)
