Zone Changes Approved for Area Mining Company

Posted: Updated:

Comstock Mining Inc. has been hauling ore in Storey County since the summer of 2012. Now they want to expand into Lyon County. Something that some residents of Silver City don't want to see.

About 250 people crowded into the Lyon County Commissioners meeting, Thursday. The issue -- making changes that could eventually allow mining on a 94-acre parcel near Silver City.

"The songbirds couldn't stand it, the rattlesnakes can't stand it, the mice can't stand it, why should we have to put up with it as well?"

"We don't understand why we have to be destitute for these people to have a job and why our neighbors have to be destitute, as well."

The Comstock Mine is northwest of Silver City. People living there say the change will create problems for the small town.

Last month, the planning commission recommended to deny the change.

"Mining is an industry that Nevada has relied on as a funding source as well as a job creator since it's inception. But this is the wrong project in the wrong location," says resident Joe McCarthy.

The mine employs more than 100 people, and some say the company's growth could be a valuable asset to a county that was hit hard by the recession.

"I can't help but be excited about the surge for a new source of jobs and tax revenue."

"Every property owner in Lyon County has the right to use his privately owned property to it's full potential."

Comstock Mining Inc. offered changes today -- that would leave 15 acres as they are. The approval means less density and allows industry to 79 acres.

"I do not believe that we should sacrifice quality of life and I do not believe we should sacrifice the economic possibilities. Ultimately, we would have no sustainable life or qualities if we didn't have economic growth," says Corrado DeGasperis, Comstock Mining, Inc. President.

While the changes have been approved, Comstock Mining still doesn't have the go-ahead to begin operations on that parcel.

Now they must apply for a special use permit and there's no timeline when that could happen.

The Lyon County Board of Commissioners voted 4-to-1 to amend the master plan, and unanimously voted to make zoning changes.
