New Year's Eve Gives Boost to Downtown Reno Businesses

Posted: Updated:

New Year's Eve is one of the biggest events of the year for downtown Reno, with as many as 7,000 people flooding Virginia Street businesses.

"People live for the fireworks," Rick Murdock, Eldorado Vice President of Casino Marketing said. "It's a 15 minute show. It's coming off of four roofs, downtown. Fortunately, for the Eldorado, we're right in the middle of it. So, people use us as their base."

People used that base to buy food and drinks and to do a little bit of gambling.

Bill and Cindi Thompson are visiting from Patterson, California.

Just two of many people in the Biggest Little City, from out-of-state.

"It's kind of a tradition that we've gotten into the last several years," Bill Thompson said.

"And we love to stay outside, freezing to death, watching the fireworks," Cindi Thompson said.

"We came to Reno last year at the Eldorado for New Year's in 2013," Chelsea Bailey, Redding, Calif. resident said. "So, starting and ending the year just kind of seemed to fit.

There are more than 4,100 hotel rooms between the Eldorado, Silver Legacy, and Circus Circus.

And they're completely booked.

"All the hotels are full," Murdock said. "So, just imagine two or three to a room. Probably more than that, times how many rooms you have."

They're finding plenty of ways to spend their money.

"We like the shows and the food and entertainment and so on," Bill Thompson said. "That part's enjoyable for us."

"We have a couple of restaurants that we always frequent when we come here," Cindi Thompson said.

The Eldorado typically stays busy from December 30 till New Year's Day.

Since January first is filled with college football bowl games, they are seeing a spike in their sports book, too.

"A lot of betting going on," Murdock said. "And it just adds to the 31st. Everybody hit it pretty hard last night but they're back at it today, and they're watching the games, their favorite teams."

While many are leaving their money behind, some are hoping 2014 starts off on a winning note.

"It's been a lot of fun and I've made some money playing poker," Bailey said. "So, lets hope that stays positive."
