The Business of New Year's Resolutions

Better health is at the top of a lot of New Year's resolutions. And that is good news for local health-related businesses.  Gym memberships are up.

"We are definitely seeing a spike in membership with New Year's resolutions. We do every year." says Cathie Riley with membership at Sports West in Reno.

She says more and more people are looking for a lifestyle change with the new year. They are ready to get healthy. And Sports West works to be able to offer them variety and workouts that fit into their worlds.

"It's no longer just about losing weight," says Sports West trainer Sandi Meyer. "It's more and more about variation and working on what we call functional fitness; working on balance and skills that will help in everyday life."

And Tom Stewart of Truckee Meadows Herbs would agree.

"It's my favorite time of year because people are actually trying to make a lifestyle change. And herbs and supplements are playing a role in that. In fact he says he's seen about a 20% increase in business this year.

"I don't like it when people just want to lose weight because there is a new supplement for that every week and it takes time to see if they work. But we have a lot of people come in interested in cleansing their bodies of toxins, or to stop smoking. There are some that want to cut down on coffee, and we have teas for that. And a lot of folks want to manage stress and want to sleep better. Those are positive changes and we are seeing more and more people interested in those."
