Health Law to Put Calorie Info on Vending Machines

Posted: Updated:

Starting early next year, about five million vending machines nationwide will be required to display calorie information.

The new FDA regulations apply to more than 10,000 vending machine companies nationwide that operate 20 or more machines.

The result will be similar to the calorie count menus in restaurants.

In vending machines, customers will see the calories next to their snack choice.

The FDA hopes this will help consumers go for alternatives that will help them stick to their new year's resolutions.

This update won't be cheap. The FDA estimates the cost to the industry will be $25.8 million  initially and $24-million every year after that.

The National Automatic Merchandising Association says complying with the law will be expensive for small companies with few employees and already low profit margins. But the FDA also estimates if just .02% of obese adults ate 100 fewer calories per week, it would save $24-million  or more in annual health care costs.
