Death Investigation Continues at Eldorado Hotel Casino

Posted: Updated:

Victor Victoria-Acevedo died nearly two weeks ago after police responded to a trespassing call at the Eldorado. It happened during the Santa Pub Crawl.

Carlos Robles was with Victoria-Acevedo that night, and says when they got carded at the entrance of the BuBinga lounge, his friend was mistaken as someone else. They were asked to leave, but things escalated before they made it out of the casino. "He said 'Let's leave. I don't want to start nothing.' We started walking away and they kept following us, all the way until we went down the stairs."

Robles says there were three people in his group followed by about six security guards inside the Eldorado. He says he doesn't know what caused the altercation that happened next. "I saw him getting picked up. They grabbed him from behind. They wrapped him so that he didn't have his hands on the ground, from the drop. And they just slammed him."

All three were cuffed and taken to the security office. That's when Robles said he knew something was wrong with Victoria-Acevedo. "He wasn't acting right. He was mumbling. He was bleeding from the mouth. I didn't know what was wrong with him."

When the police arrived, one of the officers could tell he needed medical attention. "There were no visible external injuries. He was very lethargic. Didn't know if it was possibly due to intoxication or if there was actually an injury," says Deputy Chief Mac Venzon.

"They kept insisting that he was on drugs or he was hella drunk. We weren't; we had been drinking but that's it. We didn't take anything else," says Robles.

Victoria-Acevedo was taken to Saint Mary's Regional Medical Center and died early December 15th. An autopsy was perfromed, but a cause of death remains unknown.

"They're awaiting some toxicology reports. That could take several weeks. Until all of that comes in, I'm not sure that they're ready to determine an exact cause of death yet."

Investigators have interviewed a number of witnesses and are reviewing surveillance video from the casino. "There's multiple cameras, multiple angles. Once we put that all together and try to establish a timeline, and if anybody has video from outside of where he came into the Eldorado, that would be helpful."

The Eldorado turned down our interview request but have released a statement saying in part "the Eldorado is fully cooperating with the police investigation and is in the process of conducting its own investigation into the events that took place December 15."

The Reno Police Department is also investigating anything that may have happened during the day or two prior to the Eldorado incident to see if anything else may have happened to cause Victoria-Acevedo's death.
