Target Faces Class-Action Suits After Massive Security Breach

Posted: Updated:

Target is facing class-action lawsuits after the company revealed a massive security breach, impacting debit and credit cards used at its stores.

As many as 40 million people who shopped between November 27th and December 15th could be vulnerable including Nora Frausto.

"Has this impacted your holiday shopping?"

"Definitely! I immediately looked at my account, checked all my receipts and every time I come to Target, since the news, I pay in cash."

The security blog that first reported the Target breach now claims many of those stolen cards "… have been flooding underground black markets in recent weeks, selling in batches of one million cards and going for anywhere from $20 to more than $100 per card."

Nora and her family were also victims of identify theft 9 months ago in an unrelated breach. They lost $3,000 from their checking account, so they're not taking any chances with Target.

"After I heard about this, I download a bank app and I'm now getting alerts every time there's a transaction on my account," says Frausto.

Victims of the target breach won't be held financially responsible for fraudulent charges to their accounts, but the process of straightening out their credit could take months.

Target is offering free credit monitoring services to affected customers.

Meanwhile, Target Corp. said the Department of Justice is investigating the security breach.

The DOJ declined to comment on whether it's investigating Target, the nation's second largest discounter.

Target also said that it's teaming up with the U.S. Secret Service in its own investigation. Target said the Secret Service has asked the company not to share many of the details of the probe.

Additionally, Target said that it held a conference call with the state attorneys general on Monday.
