Kids Cafe Program Offers Free Meals For Kids

Posted: Updated:

According to officials with the Food Bank of Northern Nevada, one in four children in Washoe County is at risk of hunger.

The Kids Cafe program will feed children a free, nutrient meal during winter break.

"We have a few sites where kids can eat breakfast and lunch every Monday through Friday, except Christmas and New Year's Day," said Jocelyn Lantrip with the Food Bank of Northern Nevada. "Any child can participate, just go in and have a free meal."

Parents don't have to sign their children up or enroll in any program to be fed.

Lantrip said the meals are very similar to the nutritious meals children receive every day at school, like milk and vegetables.

"We have some heart wrenching stories from teachers who say 'I have a family that I'm really worried about when school is over.' We know they are barely getting by, the kids are eating free lunch and they're really relying on it. That's why our focus has always definitely been very high on children."

The meals will be served at three locations: The Neil Road Recreational Center, The Evelyn Mount Community Center and at the Joe Mitchell Center in Lemmon Valley.

Breakfast will be served from 8:30am - 9am. Lunch is from noon to 12:30pm on Monday through Friday on days during winter break, except Christmas and New Year's Day.

Everyone age 18 and under is welcome.

You can watch the interview in its entirety on Face the State this weekend. The show airs Saturday at 3:30 p.m. and Sunday at 6:30 a.m.
