Postal Service Ready for Holiday Shipments, Deadlines

Posted: Updated:

The U.S. Postal Service is in high gear right now making sure all the cards and packages crossing the country are delivered by Christmas. And while they don't hire on extra help during the holiday season, they say existing workers are putting in a lot of overtime. They also say that they are dealing with a lot more packages this year than last.

"We will handle 420 million packages nationwide this year. That's a 12% increase in the number of packages we dealt with last year," says Carry Morgan, station manager for the Peavine Station in northwest Reno.

And with so many packages going through they say it's important to get addresses right. "Print the address on one side of the package and print it clearly, use directionals, apartment numbers and never guess at the zip codes," Morgan says.

If everyone does that, she says, everyone's time in line should be well under five minutes.

By the way here are the official shipping deadlines:

First Class Letters  12/20

Priority Packages  12/21

Express Mail  12/22
