From the Washoe County School District:
The Washoe County School District (WCSD) will hold its second intersession following the winter break. As part of the new balanced calendar, students at more than three dozen schools in the District will attend intersession classes and activities from Monday, Jan. 6 through Friday, Jan. 10.
Schools in Incline Village will observe a different calendar. Incline students who require extra assistance will be invited to attend intersession classes during a two-week winter break from Dec. 23 through Jan. 3. All Incline students will return to a regular class schedule on Monday, Jan. 6.
During these intersessions, high school students will prepare for High School Proficiency Exams (HSPE) and Advanced Placement (AP) tests and will work toward credit recovery. Middle school students will study core subjects and prepare for Criterion Reference Testing (CRT), which will take place later in the school year. Students at the elementary school level will attend classes and activities involving reading, math, and language skills.
"Intersessions are designed to provide extra support for students at each level, ensuring they are making progress toward their academic goals," said Paul LaMarca, chief school performance officer for WCSD. "This is a great opportunity for teachers and staff members to work with students who need extra help and to ensure that they stay on track to graduation, college, and highly-skilled careers."
Under the balanced calendar introduced during the 2013-14 school year, WCSD scheduled three intersessions. The first was held for one week in October, and a follow-up survey of parents and the community showed positive feedback.
"Seventy-eight percent of the people surveyed indicated that they enjoyed the break," said Bryn LaPenta, senior director of student accounting. "More than 65 percent of parents whose children attended classes or activities during the break felt it was a positive experience for their child."
The third intersession will be held during the week following spring break, from April 7 through April 11.
