Christmas Magic for Senior Citizens of Northern Nevada

Posted: Updated:

"Be a Santa to a Senior" provides Christmas gifts to thousands of elderly in our community who are either alone or financially challenged. The program was created by Home Instead Senior Care. Organizer Sandi De Boer says it takes hundreds of man hours to coordinate, but the work is a labor of love.

"It was amazing to watch about 120 community people come in and wrap a couple thousand Christmas presents in one hour" says De Boer.

This Saturday more than 100 volunteers gathered to wrap nearly 3,000 presents at the Washoe County Senior Center in Reno. 11-year-old Tony Magallanes says he came to help because "you don't want the elderly or anyone to feel left out when they're watching someone open their presents and they don't have anything."

The gifts will be delivered to nearly 2,000 senior citizens in Northern Nevada. The donated items were collected through Home Instead Senior Care, which has been running the program for 8 years. Each gift was hand-chosen for a specific senior and their wish list.
