Ron Wood Family Resource Center Needs Donations To Help Others

Posted: Updated:

Our goal this week is to highlight a few local, nonprofits that our Share Your Christmas Drive-By Food Drive helps, like the Ron Wood Family Resource Center.

The center opened in 1995 and has helped so many people over the past couple decades.

I spoke with Joyce Buckingham. She is the Executive Director for the Ron Wood Family Resource Center.

She said the need is up about 15% since last year.

"We're looking at folks that need helping with housing, rent utility assistance, obviously food, supplemental food through the WIC program, a variety of parenting programs we offer. What we are seeing mostly is people coming in that are in crisis mode."

The Ron Wood Family Resource Center offers 18 different programs that help meet all those different requests.

Buckingham said they are serving more than 3,600 people per month and that's counting just those needing emergency food.

She said during here eight years at the resource center, the face of hunger and the homeless has changed. Buckingham said the majority of people they are serving are the unemployed or in between jobs, just looking for a little bit of assistance.

I asked Buckingham to share with me the reaction she gets when those in need receive the food donated to our Share Your Christmas Drive-By Food Drive.

"They're thankful. They're glad we are there and we're glad they come to us with their humble nature and they know that we are there for them."

You can watch the entire interview on my weekend show Face the State Saturday at 4pm and Sunday at 6:30am.

If you would like to donate food or money to help nonprofits, like the Ron Wood Family Resource Center, our Share Your Chrismas Drive-By Food Drive is Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. We'll collect donations at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno, the Governor's Mansion in Carson City and the Carson Valley Inn in Minden.
