New Meal Site for Seniors Opens in Cold Springs

Posted: Updated:

After four years of working to get it done, finally Wednesday was the grand opening of the Cold Springs congregate meal site.

Grady Tarbutton, the director of Washoe County Senior Services, said it's the first congregate meal site the county's opened since the recession hit.

Nevada is the tenth lowest in the nation when it comes to food security for seniors and this new meal site at the Cold Springs Community Center will go a long way in helping change that.

"This is the fastest growing area in the county when it comes to the senior population. As people get older and on fixed incomes, they need a little help with staying at home and staying independent."

Tarbutton said they applied for a grant to pay for the new meal site.

He said Washoe County Senior Services did a poll and about 40% of seniors said this will be their only meal of the day.

Now it's not just any meal thrown together; it's prepared by a registered dietitian to make sure seniors get the nutrients needed to remain strong and healthy.

Washoe County Commissioner for District 5, Bonnie Weber, said this is a great day for seniors.

"To have this opportunity right here in their own neighborhood to come out and have that socialization, be able to have a meal, a hot meal is going to be the best thing that could ever happen to them."

For those of you seniors who want or need a meal, a $2 donation is encouraged, but not mandatory. Lunch is served Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
