Mandela's Body Lying in State in South Africa's Capital

Posted: Updated:

The body of Nelson Mandela is lying in state at the amphitheater where he was sworn in 19 years ago as South Africa's first black president.

Motorcycle-riding police officers escorted the hearse carrying Mandela's flag-draped casket from a military hospital outside of Pretoria to the Union Buildings this morning. People lined the streets to watch the procession, singing songs from the struggle against the apartheid regime and calling out their farewells to Mandela, who died last week at the age of 95.

A military honor guard representing the various services and divisions of the South African National Defense Force carried the casket to the viewing area, where they removed the flag. Four naval officers in white uniform are keeping watch over the body.

Mandela's grandson Mandla and the country's defense minister led mourners into the viewing area. His coffin has a glass cover allowing them to look in on Mandela one last time.
