Record Demand for Natural Gas in Reno-Sparks

Posted: Updated:

From NV Energy:

Due to frigid temperatures, NV Energy's natural gas customers in the Reno-Sparks area have set an all-time peak for natural gas consumption, surpassing the record established four years ago. Customers consumed 160,074 dekatherms* of gas for the 24-hour period beginning at 7 a.m. on Sunday and ending on Monday at 7 a.m.

The previous all-time peak usage record for the area was 156,332 dekatherms for the 24-hour period ending on Thursday, Dec. 10, 2009.

NV Energy has not had any difficulties serving the increased customer demand, according to John Owens, gas business director for the company.

To hold down heating costs during the winter months, NV Energy advises customers to keep their  furnace thermostats set at 58 degrees at night or when away from home and at 68 degrees while at home. For more energy savings tips, visit

NV Energy serves approximately 153,000 natural gas customers in Reno-Sparks and outlying areas. The company's natural gas distribution system relies on supplies transported to the region by two interstate natural gas pipelines.
