Authorities say a 24-year-old man is in critical condition after an explosion at the Bango Oil Refining Company in Fallon that happened after 9am Monday.

Authorities say the man's body was hit with hot oil - and was flown by Care Flight to Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno then to the University of California, Davis burn center for treatment.

We spoke with a paramedic who helped treat the man's second and third degree burns. She says when she arrived he was in bad shape.

"Our patient's (burns) covered quite a bit of his body. We estimated about 58% of his body was covered in oil burns. The particular type of material he was covered in was extremely difficult to get off," says Laura Hardesty.

Authorities tell us no one is missing, and that all workers are accounted for. Plant Manager Ron Bell told the AP that 14 people were at the site at the time of the blast. (Bango employs 40 people in Fallon.)

Churchill County Deputies say there is NO chemical threat to the community. Authorities say the explosion happened when workers tried to thaw a frozen pipe with a weed burner. The plant was operating as normal when the explosion happened.

Crews have controlled a small fire that broke out, and are standing by to make sure a secondary fire does not start. Deputies say they didn't call for evacuations because the plant is located far away from homes. Bango's owner Omega Holdings later commented "no material escaped the facility that would be considered dangerous to the surrounding environs or local residents."

As bad as this incident was, the Churchill County sheriff says it could have been much worse.

"In a less rural environment, it would have been an HAZMAT issue with all that smoke. We were fortunate there was no breeze, so the smoke ended up high in the atmosphere and we don't have a lot of residents that live real close. In an urban environment, this would have been a big deal for sure," says Sheriff Ben Trotter.

Nevada-based Bango Oil Refining recycles used oil.

Plant operations are suspended pending a full investigation of the matter.

Bango Refining has dispatched a response and investigation team that will be on-site this evening. Dave Peel, chief operating officer, said, "We are grateful for the first responders who airlifted the injured employee to the hospital and to those whose efforts put out the fire. Our thoughts and prayers go out to our employee's family and every effort will be made to assure them that he receives the care he deserves."
