Local Couple Shares Memories of Nelson Mandela

Posted: Updated:

Anyone who lived through apartheid knows how much change Former South African President Nelson Mandela made to this world. Both Beth Macmillan and Danell Wilson-Pearlman live in Reno now, and both grew up in South Africa. They got together today to talk about the differences he made.

"I went to school with all white children and that was our normal," Macmillan says.

"I never really saw a real world of people of color living with whites until college," Wilson-Pearlman said.

And when the time came they both voted to bring Mandela to power.

"I was in South Africa at the time," said Wilson-Pearlman. "I remember walking downtown with my friends after we voted talking about it and realizing we were a part of history."

Beth Macmillan was in Reno.

"We couldn't vote here in Reno but we could vote at the consulate's office in Oakland so my friends and I drove down and voted. I guess it was a way of feeling paying back or righting a wrong that was done when we grew up," Macmillan said.

They both sung the praises of what an amazing man Mandela was for bringing such change without violence.

Reno will be holding a multi-faith memorial service for Nelson Mandela this Sunday. It will be held at the Buddhist Center at 820 Plumas Street in Reno, starting at 2 p.m.
