Area Tire Sales Spike After Snow Storm

Posted: Updated:

The tire industry is booming in northern Nevada.

Lisa Smith is the manager of Mill Street Tire, where she says employees are working 12 hours a day and customers have more than doubled this week.

"I have four cars on the rack and I have seven cars waiting, consistently," Smith said.

Tuesday's snow storm left many area roads in a mess.

Some cars couldn't get enough traction to drive on the slick roads.

"I've had people come in," Smith said. "They've had their winter tires on already and they've seen people right in front of them, spinning out."

More than 100 crashes happened throughout the area, because of the storm.

The wrecks served as a wake-up call for many drivers.

"I saw a lot of wrecks and a lot of spinouts and stuff like that," Jeff Hickey said. "So, I try to keep ahead of the game."

Hickey drives more than 150 miles a day and makes sure his wheels are good to go.

"I do a lot of driving through the mountains," Hickey said. "So, it's important to keep up on that."

Many customers are buying snow tires that are designed to flex and grip to the snow and ice.

"Your security is top-notch," Smith said. "If you have the winter tires on, you know you can make it."

It's also important to check your antifreeze levels and make sure you have good windshield wipers.

Checking these and your tires is something many people forget to do until the snowy weather hits.

"You don't think about it when you're driving around," Smith said. "The grounds are dry but there's a lot of difference between an all-season tire and a snow tire, when the ice hits. It's important to get it done before the other storm hits."

If you need new tires but can't afford it right now, some tire shops offer financing plans to give you more time to pay for them.
