Classes Canceled at Nancy Gomes Elementary School

Posted: Updated:

Classes have been canceled at Nancy Gomes Elementary School for Friday, Dec. 6 due to a low-level leak in a natural gas line within the school.

Crews are working with the Washoe County School District and NV Energy to replace the line.

WCSD says because of the leak they have canceled all classes for Friday as well as before and after school activities.

families and staff members of the school are being notified about Friday's cancellation of classes and programs.

The district says they expect the repairs to be finished this weekend and classes and programs should resume Monday morning.

The Washoe County School District released this statement Friday afternoon:

Student and staff safety is our highest priority at all times, in every school.

WCSD staff has been responding and actively investigating the cause of gas smells that have been reported at Nancy Gomes ES to determine whether it was natural gas or nuisance exhaust gas from the boilers.  NV Energy has also recently been assisting in this investigation.  The gas smells have not been consistent and at no time did air particulate monitoring equipment detect any levels that were at dangerous levels or require closure or evacuation of the school.

Yesterday after classes were dismissed, a pressure test was performed on the gas line that indicated that a low level leak was occurring somewhere on the natural gas line.  Air particulate monitoring equipment was unable to locate the location of the gas leak.  The decision was then made by the School District to replace the entire gas line that goes into and under the school.

Based on this pressure test and to expedite this work, the decision was made to cancel classes today, Friday, December 6, so that repairs could be made and allow classes to resume at the normal time on Monday morning, December 9th.
