Reno Police Investigate Counterfeit Money

Posted: Updated:

Reno police want to warn local businesses about an increase in counterfeit $50 and $100 bills they've seen circulating recently.

Police say the bills are high quality so businesses should be sure to inspect currency carefully to ensure it's genuine.

Some things to look for:

  • an embedded security strip that runs from the top to the bottom of the bills
  • a colored security strip that appears under ultraviolet light
  • a watermark of a portrait on the front of bills printed since 1996
  • color shifting ink on bills printed since 1996.
  • whether or not the fine print is clearly visible.

If you do find one - hang on to it and call police.
