Tips on Getting Your Car Winter Ready

Posted: Updated:

Big trucks with tread do better when there's a snowstorm like this but sedans often spin out.

While the snow sure looks pretty, there's been no shortage of cars that can't quite cut it.

"It's horrible. Roads are terrible and taking the kids to school was a nightmare."

NHP troopers say it never fails - when we haven't had significant snow in awhile it takes some getting used to - and some crucial car care.

"Look at wiper blades, look at edges to see if they're torn."

Lt. Andy McAfee also suggests making sure your car has enough coolant but the tires are the most important.

"These ones are pretty bad borderline illegal...You can see the outside edge is balding see how slick it is there."

So we asked drivers in south Reno if they got ready for this wintry mix of snow and ice.

"How did you prepare today?"

"Got all wheel drive. Definitely seems people are twisting and turning out there."

Another person told us, "antifreeze, windshield wipers, make sure heater works."

But no matter how much preparation there's still always a chance the ice takes control, forcing you not to.

"It kinda melted and froze made it treacherous out there."
