Channel 2 Food Drive Hasn't Started, But You Can Start Giving Now

Posted: Updated:

Our Channel 2 News Annual Share Your Christmas Drive-By Food Drive doesn't officially start for another week and a half, but you can begin giving now.

The Genoa Volunteer Fire Department and the Douglas County Senior Center are taking your donations right now.

"We've had some people from the Jacks Valley area, up on the curve, in Alpine View Estates donate," said William Hutchison, Volunteer Fire Chief for Genoa. "This has made it very convenient for them to donate here, rather than go down to the CVI (Carson Valley Inn) the day of when it's kind of a madhouse."

Travis Lee is the Transit and Public Manager for Douglas County. He said their community always steps up when it comes to giving.

"I know from previous years, we raised more food than even some of our neighboring counties and we hope to do that again."

Both places are taking your donations from now until December 13th, the day Our Share Your Christmas Drive-By Food Drive kicks off.

All donations, from both sites, will go to the Carson Valley Community Food Closet, where they serve about 1,000 people every year and half of those are children.

"This food drive is essential to us meeting our mission in feeding the families in Douglas County that we serve," said Sarah Sanchez with the Carson Valley Community Food Closet. "The food we receive from this food drive will end up helping us six, eight, ten months from now, so it will last us almost an entire year."

If you want to donate, here's where you can go.

The Genoa Volunteer Fire Station 3 is located at 2298 Main Street, Genoa.

The Douglas County Senior Center is at 2300 Meadow Lane in Gardnerville.

You can also donate at Our Share Your Christmas Drive By Food Drive, which is coming up on Friday, December 13th from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m.

We'll be set up at the Grand Sierra Resort, the Governor's Mansion in Carson City and the Carson Valley Inn in Minden.
