AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) is caused by HIV (human immunodeficiency virus). World AIDS Day is celebrated on December 1 around the globe each year to raise awareness, show solidarity with people affected by HIV/AIDS, commemorate those who have passed on, and celebrate the progress that has been made in eradicating this disease.

In 2012 in Nevada, 8,792 persons were known to be living with HIV/AIDS, over half of whom had a diagnosis of AIDS.  Currently, there are persons with HIV/AIDS living in each of Nevada's 17 counties.  Most new HIV infections are diagnosed in Clark County, accounting for about 85 percent of persons living with HIV/AIDS in Nevada.

The World AIDS Day theme for 2013 is "Getting to Zero." This theme encourages working together to decrease new HIV infections, AIDS-related deaths, and discrimination to "zero."

Get tested and be aware!  People who are infected with HIV and know their status have the knowledge to prevent transmission of the virus to others and receive the medical care needed to live a healthy, longer life.
