Volunteers Feed the Needy on Thanksgiving Day

Posted: Updated:

St. Vincent's Dining Room serves about 600 meals everyday. But that number more than doubled on Thanksgiving Day.

For the 59th straight year, John Ascuaga's Nugget has provided them with Thanksgiving dinner for the hungry.

"We're blessed that we're in the right position to be able to help people, no questions asked," Ray Trevino, Director of St. Vincent's Dining Room said.

Volunteers donated their time to make sure no one goes hungry.

Trays full of Thanksgiving dinner came complete with all the fixings.

"80 turkeys with the filling, sweet potatoes, pumpkin pie," Trevino said. "It's a tremendous meal."

More than 1,300 meals were served at the dining hall, all prepared by the Nugget's kitchen staff.

"Even if we can't do it every day of the year, this is really a way to take a holiday and give everybody a great quality meal and a chance to get together," Stephen Ascuaga said.

Among the volunteers serving food was Nevada's first family.

Governor Brian Sandoval says coming down with Kathleen and their kids is a great way to give back.

"I'm so proud of the Nevada family," Sandoval said. "We probably have over 100 volunteers here, today, who are here to help serve the homeless and make sure that they have a good celebration as well."

Those that came for dinner say they won't forget the help that people have given them.

Many of them left with full stomachs and an appreciation for the good that complete strangers have done for them.

"People are people and I still think that people are good," Weldon Kennedy said. "These people took time away from their families to come here. I think that's great."

And of course, it wouldn't be Thanksgiving without leftovers.

"I think it's just wonderful," Betty Brown said. "The food was just delicious. It was so plentiful. I couldn't eat it all, anyway. I'm taking mine home."

The Reno-Sparks Gospel Mission also provided Thanksgiving meals to about 600 people.

Evelyn Mount served turkey dinners at the MacGregor Inn.
