You can drink some delicious wine and at the same time, help a local woman needing brain surgery Wednesday night at a fundraiser.
At 26, Jonnie Schmitt was told by doctors that she had a pineal cyst inside her brain, which will now require surgery, but this type of operation is not performed in the Reno area, so she and her family will have to travel to California. The neurosurgeon is out of network for Schmitt's insurance plan and her share of the cost is several thousand dollars (upwards of $35,000.)
If Schimitt is unable to have the surgery, the cyst can continue to grow causing seizures, and in severe cases, coma, as well as hydrocephalus (from blockage of the spinal fluid from the enlarged cyst.) At that point, a permanent shunt would have to be placed inside her brain.
The wine tasting fundraiser will be held Wednesday at 5pm inside L'uva Bella Wine Gallery at The Summit next to Dillard's. There will also be a raffle and live music.
Tickets are $25, and $30 at the door. To buy tickets, call L'uva Bella Wine Gallery at 775-851-1110.
