More Retail Stores to Open on Thanksgiving

Posted: Updated:

Shopping at retail stores on Thanksgiving is becoming a controversial topic. Some believe that Thanksgiving should be spent with family in the traditional way. Others say, go ahead and open the doors. This year Meadowood Mall in Reno will open at 8 pm on Thanksgiving evening. But a local student is asking people to sign an online petition urging Simon Property Group, which owns the mall, to keep the stores closed on the holiday.

"What's next?" asked Asma Khan, who is a student at the University of Nevada, Reno. "Are we going to open all day on Thanksgiving? Are we going to stay open on Christmas? Where do you draw the line?" she said.

Dave Young believes stores should be allowed to open when they want. "People have to work and people still go out on Thanksgiving and want to buy things. So yeah, I think it should be open. Yeah," he said.

This year more stores are opening on Thanksgiving, as retailers stretch Black Friday sales into the holiday itself. There's a lot at stake, as people look for deals on everything from electronics to toys.

Here in northern Nevada, local casinos have been staying open on holidays for years. Gregg Carano, Corporate Food and Beverage Manager at the Eldorado Hotel Casino, says holidays are what keeps Northern Nevada gaming properties successful. "People come up from the Bay Area," said Carano. He said the Eldorado and other local properties are mostly full for the Thanksgiving weekend. "The restaurant business, the hotel business, the casino business-- we thrive on holidays. Every one of our employees-- they make the most money on holidays. We're the busiest on holidays so they expect to work on holidays," Carano said. He said they take their holiday time when most people go back to work.

Meadowood Mall isn't the only retail mall in our area that will be opening on Thanksgiving evening. The Legends at Sparks Marina will open at 8pm and Wal Mart is opening two hours earlier this year, at 6pm instead of 8pm.
