Immigration Advocates to Host Peaceful Walk for Reform Saturday

Posted: Updated:

Several local organizations will hold a peaceful walk for immigration reform Saturday that will end in downtown Reno.

Mi Familia Vota along with several other groups is organizing the walk in hopes of bringing awarness back to the issue it says has been ignored by Congress amongst the recent government shutdown and Affordable Care Act website issues.

In response, a coalition of immigration advocacy groups will hold the walk from four different locations: Rep Amodei's Office, St. Thomas Aquinas Cathedral, St. Therese – Little Flower Church, and the University of Nevada.

Event participants can register at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/7BKH53J for their choice of starting points. Walks start as early as 11:30am, but all walks will end at 2pm.

The other organizers are Justice for Immigrants, Northern NV Latino Alliance, UNR Latino Advisory Board, ArtisticSto Designs, Conguate, Ahora Latino Journal, UNR Latino Research Center, ACLU of Nevada, PLAN and ACTIONN.

"There is a definite sense of urgency to get immigration reform passed. Every day that
Immigration is not a priority, is one more day that we will continue without a solution for the
current system, and one more day in which families have to be separated due to deportations. We know that recent polls conducted in NV District 2 show that over 70% of its constituents are in favor of an immigration reform bill that increases border security, blocks employers from hiring undocumented immigrants, and makes sure that undocumented immigrants already in the US, with no criminal record, are able to register for gained status. This means that the majority of the people are asking for reform and the time to do it is now," said one of the event's organizers.

Event coordinators say they have invited Congressman Amodei to attend the event, as well as Senator Dean Heller and Senator Harry Reid and are currently awaiting their response.
