Washoe County School District representatives say they'll apply for two federal grants in the wake of last month's Sparks Middle School shooting.
A portion of the $50,000 Department of Education grant would go to immediate needs following a school emergency, while a majority of the grant would fund trauma support and for substitutes so staff could receive counseling.
A second $250,000 grant would go towards hiring people to support school staff and students.
Police say 12-year-old Jose Reyes shot and killed math Michael Landsberry and wounded two fellow students before killing himself outside the school on October 21st.
The organization managing the Sparks Middle School Compassion Fund says of last Friday they had collected about $16,000 in donations from the community. You can donate directly to the SMS Compassion Fund by calling 775-333-5499 or online.
