Several religious leaders joined Reno Mayor Bob Cashell Tuesday to discuss the possible restart of invocation at city council meetings.
Universal Society of Hinduism President Rajan Zed and a dozen other leaders of different faiths told Cashell at city hall on Tuesday that invocations are standard practice at many councils across Nevada, including Las Vegas, Sparks and Carson City.
They say by offering prayers that don't speak to a specific religion, they can satisfy the constitutional separation of church and state. Cashell says he has an open mind about the matter and will ask the council to put it on an upcoming agenda.
Opponents say freedom of religion also means freedom from religion. (AP)
