BLM Seeks Comment on Pine Nut Mountains Plan

Posted: Updated:

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) -- Federal land managers are accepting public comment on a project aimed at reducing the fire danger to people and homes along the Pine Nut Mountains near Minden.
The Bureau of Land Management proposes to implement "vegetation treatments" on up to 24,654 acres of the range in Douglas, Lyon and Carson City counties.
BLM officials say treatments include hand and mechanical thinning and removal of trees and brush, prescribed fire and seeding.
They say plans call for the project to be implemented over a 10- to 15-year period to restore ecological balance and to reduce hazardous fuels to protect people and property from severe wildfires.
The agency is accepting public comment on its Pine Nut Land Health Project Draft Environmental Assessment until Nov. 29.
The Bison Fire, sparked by lightning July 4, threatened nearly 100 structures and charred about 37.5 square miles in the Pine Nut Mountains southeast of Carson City.
The scorched rangeland includes thousands of acres identified as priority habitat for the greater sage grouse and other sensitive species.
