Nearly three weeks after the shooting at Sparks Middle School, thousands of dollars in donations are making their way to the families of the victims.
The organization managing the Sparks Middle School Compassion Fund says of Friday morning they have collected about $16,000 in donations from the community.
And they started flowing in almost immediately after the shooting.
"The very next day after the event, credit card gifts started coming in right away. Checks started coming in that day and after 2, 3, 4 days lots of checks were coming in that had been mailed," says Chris Askin.
The Community Foundation of Northern Nevada stepped in to help organize the outpouring of support from the community after the shooting on October 21.
They were able to get a website set up by the next morning to receive the donations. And this week, the foundation made its first distribution of funds to the families.
The donated money will help them with medical bills and funeral costs as well as making up for missed work and flying family members in to help during this time of recovery.
But Askin says, the families still need help. "The gifts that we have received are not going to meet all the needs of the families, and so we continue to need support."
