Food Bank Volunteers on the Rise

Posted: Updated:

About 35 volunteers are spending their time at the Food Bank of Northern Nevada.

Including 18 employees from Intuit.

"This is one that gives us an opportunity, as a team, to come together and work together for a good cause," Gary White, Intuit volunteer said. "And we have fun doing it. We really enjoy it."

"We have a good time and we actually think of it as team-building, as well," John Lippert, Intuit volunteer said. "And it's a way that we can help our community."

The food bank has seen their number of volunteers more than triple since 2008, working 22,000 hours a year. That's equal to 11 full-time employees.

Without them, officials say it would be impossible to move their 13-million pounds of food each year.

"That's a lot of food," Jocelyn Lantrip, Food Bank of Northern Nevada Director of Marketing said. "We have to touch all of it. We have to sort it into different categories. Food drive food, we have to make sure it's not expired or damaged."

Volunteers are putting boxes together, sorting food, and even building carts. The food bank is donating 600 carts to seniors that rely on their service.

But money donations are also needed.

One dollar is used to buy four meals, but rising food and gas prices have lowered their buying power to three meals per $1.

"Three meals is great for $1," Lantrip said. "So, it does go a long way. We have a lot of work to do and this community has always supported what we do."

Many people have volunteered at the food bank before.

Intuit employees will work there every two weeks for the rest of the year. "It's awesome. That's the whole part, right? Giving back to the community. That's who we are."

The food bank is always looking for food that's high in protein that's non-perishable.

Lantrip say the best way to donate food is to think about what you would want to feed your family, and donate something like that.

The Food Bank of Northern Nevada serves 92,000 people every month.

We'll be collecting donations for the food bank and other several non-profits during our annual Share Your Christmas Drive-by Food Drive just five weeks from now. Our 21st annual drive is Friday, December 13th from 6 am to 6 pm. We'll have drop-off locations at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno, the governor's mansion in Carson City and the Carson Valley Inn in Minden. We hope you'll come out and donate!
