Yerington Mine Pollution Deal Brings Residents $19.5 Million

Posted: Updated:

Rural neighbors of an abandoned WWII-era copper mine that has leaked toxic chemicals for decades have won almost $20 million in a settlement from BP America.

The money is being awarded to about 700 past and present neighbors of the Anaconda Mine built on the edge of Yerington in 1941.

Residents said in a class-action suit filed in 2011 that the company covered up the contamination, negligently concealing the extent of uranium, arsenic and other pollutants leaking into their drinking water wells from the mine.

Under the $19.5 million settlement, BP acknowledges no wrongdoing, but does pay $2.6 million in attorney fees for the residents.
