Washoe County Commissioners Will Not Vote on AB 46

Posted: Updated:

The Washoe County Commission has decided not to make a decision on Assembly Bill 46. The bill, along with funding to improve schools in Washoe County, will die on January 1.

AB 46 needed the approval of the county commission in order to take effect.

The bill would have raised property and sales taxes to pay for capital improvements in schools, for things like boilers, roofs and windows.

AB 46 proposed to increase sales tax by ¼ of 1 percent in Washoe County and property tax by 5 cents per $100 of a home's assessed value.

Commissioners decided to take no action on the issue Tuesday night.

Governor Brian Sandoval signed AB 46 into law June 11, 2013. The bill, passed by the Nevada Legislature, included an amendment that allowed the Washoe County Board of Commissioners to determine whether to enact a proposal that would generate funding for critical school repairs and maintenance in the WCSD. The proposal needed to be approved by 4 of the 5 County Commissioners by Jan. 1, 2014 to be enacted.
