Historic Reno Railroad Building to Become A Brewery

Posted: Updated:

A couple of Reno natives are opening one of the county's first combined brewery and distillery at the site of the historic Nevada-California-Oregon railroad passenger depot downtown.

This building was constructed in 1910 and has been vacant for about 20 years now. Until about the mid 1930's, it was used by the railroad, but soon it will become a brewery.

"Even people that didn't know what it was or the history of it, have always said to me numerous times, 'I just really love the brick building on Fourth Street.' So, I think it really has a unique character of its own and we hope to bring our own flare to it when crafting beer and spirits," says Brandon Wright.

The Depot Craft Provisions Co. is one of Washoe County's first combined brewery and distilleries to be under the same roof.

The Nevada Legislature, recently passed a law that allows craft provisions to do this so we will probably see more in the near future.

Wright says the beer will be made from locally produced grains.

They will offer more than brews, though.

They're still putting together the menu, but Wright describes it as "old world deli" kinds of food. He says the restaurant, distillery-brewery will fit about 140 people.

The hope is they can play a big role in revitalizing the Fourth Street area.

"Turning this into another neighborhood, just like Midtown, California Avenue, things like that where people can come as a destination, lot of foot traffic and meander through the street and see what the neighborhood has to offer."

The Depot Craft Provisions Co. expects to open the summer of 2014.
