Authorities say two road workers are dead after an SUV hit them in a construction zone between Battle Mountain and Elko.

Nevada Highway Patrol officials say the crash happened about 1 p.m. Tuesday near mile mark 262.

Authorities say 69-year-old driver Candace Gittins of Fort Bragg, California was approaching stopped traffic along eastbound Interstate 80 when she swerved into orange construction barrels to avoid other cars.

She struck four workers employed by the company A-Core. Fifty-three-year-old Vicki Stenovich of Spring Creek died at the scene, while 47-year-old Arthur Lucero of Gardnerville died of his injuries after being taken to Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno.

Fifty-year-old Mario Ramos of Reno was taken to Renown and is in stable condition, and 50-year-old Karen Martin was taken to a Battle Mountain hospital with minor injuries.

Troopers say Gittins was not hurt and was wearing her seatbelt. Her passenger, 75-year-old Dallas Gittins also was not hurt and wore a seatbelt.

Trooper Jim Stewart says it's unclear whether Gittins will face charges in the case.  (AP)
