Area Firewood Prices Increase as Head Into Winter

Posted: Updated:

The firewood lot on Kuenzli Street in Reno is stocked up and ready for winter. And Steve Freeman is counting on his loyal customers. He's been in this business for 30 years and while he says overall firewood business is down in Reno and Sparks, his business is going strong.

"I have loyal customers, I do what I can to be competitive and keep the prices down," he says. "The fireplace insert laws are cutting down on the number of firewood burners in the area but our business is strong."

He's referring to the Washoe Health District's policy of requiring all fireplace and wood stoves to meet efficiency standards when houses are sold. And while it has caused some to forego wood burning, most actually upgrade their equipment.

Prices are up again this year, by about 7%.

"We're charging $289 for a cord of soft wood," Freeman says. "And a cord of mixed hard and soft will cost you $389. That's what most people get. Soft wood because it's easier to get a fire going and hard wood to add on to keep it burning long and hot."

He's been delivering as many as ten cords a week, and expects that business to continue. And here's a warning he says that prices will go up as the temperatures drop.
