Parents of Sparks Middle School Shooter Say he Was Teased

We are learning more about Sparks Middle School shooter Jose Reyes from his parents.

His mother Liliana, and father, Jose, told the Reno-Gazette Journal their son was working through a speech problem that prompted teasing.

But they say he never complained about specific students or teachers.

In a statement, the couple says they had no idea their son was troubled and don't understand why he opened fire October 21st at Sparks Middle School killing a popular math teacher, wounding two students before taking his own life.

The Reno Gazette-Journal first reported the statement recorded at a law office Monday and posted a video on its website (

The Community Foundation of Western Nevada is hosting a fund to provide financial support to the victims, students, staff, families, and Sparks Middle School in the wake of the shooting. This fund, The SMS Compassion Fund, is accepting tax-deductible monetary donations.

Disbursements will be advised by representatives of the Washoe County School District and the City of Sparks under the oversight of the Community Foundation of Western Nevada, to assure the funds are distributed to meet the needs of the school community as they are identified.
