Chimney Sweep Shares Fireplace Safety

Posted: Updated:

Fred Morin is booked for more than a week out these days. For 28 years he's been a chimney sweep and he's in demand right now.

"The first cold spell we have and the phone starts ringing off the hook. I think we were getting 40 calls a day and now I'm just trying to get to everyone. It's a seasonal business all right," he says.

He uses 4-inch and 8-inch brushes to scrape clean creosote and build-up from wood burning chimneys. He says it's important to do it once a year to avoid problems and keep safe. After all, he's also a full-time firefighter so he sees the benefit of taking the proper precautions for safety with chimneys.

"You need to clean from the top down and then go in and vacuum it all up inside. Sounds easy and it's not that hard...but it's really important," he says. "Here we recommend it be done once a year and in Germany it's the law! In fact they have to be able to show a certificate that it's been done and they book out a year there."
