Authorities are investigating a Civil War-era cannonball inside a Carson City home located across the street from Carson High School.

The cannonball's owner was trying to sell it at a yard sale.

And someone with experience in Civil War-era explosives said it could be dangerous so he contacted the sheriff's office who called the Tahoe-Douglas Bomb Squad.

They say cannonballs like this can contain potentially deadly black powder.

"This gentlemen and many people across the nation think these are inert, think they're not dangerous. This one actually had fallen five feet onto a concrete floor. It's been used as a door opener, as a soccer ball, just people aren't aware of the severe danger that's associated with these," says Cmdr. Todd Moss.

The bomb squad tried to x-ray the cannonball but its steel construction was too dense to penetrate, so the Fallon Naval Air Station Explosive Ordinance Disposal Team took it for further examination.

If they find it is a live ordinance, it will be destroyed. If it's inert the owner will get it back.
