Nevada wildlife officials have captured a bear cub that survived an accident that killed its mother and a sibling.

Nevada Department of Wildlife spokesman Chris Healy says the 30-pound male cub was lured Sunday to a trap set at the spot where the mother was found dead Friday.

He says the mother and one of her cubs were fatally struck by a car Thursday night in Verdi just west of Reno, and another of her 9-month-old cubs might have survived the accident.

Healy says a mother with three cubs had recently been seen around Verdi, and wildlife officials will try to locate the other cub.

The captured cub will be taken to a Reno-area wildlife refuge, where it will be care for and prepared for release back into the wild by early spring.

Healy says officials will try to locate the other cub because it would be unable to survive the winter.

He says without the accident, the cubs would have spent the winter with their mother before going out on their own in the spring.
