Counseling Efforts, Recovery Continue at Sparks Middle School

Posted: Updated:

From the Washoe County School District:

Almost two weeks after an on-campus shooting claimed the lives of a math teacher and student and left two students injured at Sparks Middle School, counselors say the school community is slowly beginning to heal and recover.

"This was a traumatic event for our entire school family, and it will take time to make the journey back to a sense of normalcy," said Katherine Loudon, director of counseling, equity and diversity for the Washoe County School District (WCSD). "We have taken the first steps in that journey together by providing intensive, ongoing support to our school community. That support will continue for as long as our students and staff members district-wide need it."

Dozens of school counselors and psychologists from WCSD responded immediately to Sparks Middle School, Agnes Risley Elementary School, and a number of other WCSD schools to provide help and support to students and staff in the wake of the Oct. 21 shooting. Classes were cancelled at Sparks Middle School for the remainder of that week, and students returned to school Monday.

Since returning to school this week, counselors, psychologists, and community supports have been in place at the school. The National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) emergency assistance team consulted with WCSD in analyzing the support systems currently in place as well as those planned for the future.

"We have set aside plenty of time over the past week for students to express their feelings and spend quality time with their friends and teachers," said Sparks Middle School Principal Stacey Cooper. "All of us have had a difficult time, but returning to school was an important part of the healing process, and we are grateful to our school community for its support and help."

The Sparks Police Department is investigating the incident. For more information about counseling services and advice for parents, visit http://www.washoecountyschools.org/community/parent_staff_resource
