Nevada Creating More Jobs Than Half the Country

Posted: Updated:

No doubt about it, the past few years have been rough for Nevadans, but a local expert says full economic recovery is closer to becoming a reality.

According to the Department of Employment Training and Rehabilitation, Nevada has added about 23,000 jobs since October 2012.

More than 11,000 jobs were added in August, marking the largest month-over-month gain since 2005.

"Prior to the recession, job growth here in Nevada was stronger than just about any other state in the nation," says Nevada's Chief Economist, Bill Anderson. "During the recession, our declines were more pronounced than any other state in the nation. Now, we are starting to gradually make up lost ground and our latest readings show that our job growth is higher than that of 34 other states."

That is a far cry from where Nevada was just a couple years ago. Most economists were projecting the Silver State to lag behind all other states in economic recovery.

Anderson says Nevada's growing faster than anticipated and in just about every industry, especially leisure and hospitality.

So often we have heard Nevada's economic success is tied to the housing market. Well, the market is trending up and now helping a sector hardest hit by the recession.

Anderson says it appears construction is coming back. More than 4,000 construction jobs have been added in the past year or so.

"We think by the time we head out to 2015, we will have added some 12-15,000 jobs in the construction sector."

To hear what still has Anderson concerned about Nevada's economy moving forward, watch Face the State this weekend. The show airs Saturday at 4:30am and Sunday at 6:30am.
