Pilot Rescued After Plane Crash at Reno-Stead Airport

Posted: Updated:

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating a small plane crash that happened Friday morning at the Reno-Stead Airport.

Authorities say a Stead-based MiG 21 Russian fighter jet experienced brake failure upon landing around 9:15am Friday. The jet continued on until it landed in some nearby brush in ravine. Crews secured the ejection seat with the help from mechanics, and then helped the pilot out of the aircraft.

He was taken to an area hospital by ambulance with non life-threatening injuries.

No one else was hurt, but some airport equipment was damaged during the crash.

"Some of this landing equipment for an instrument landing system that type of equipment used to help aircraft land in bad weather appear to have been damaged, likely was hit by the aircraft we'll look at this at what the estimate of the cost might be to repair that," says Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority spokesperson Brian Kulpin.

Fire crews remained on scene to make the plane and nearby brush did not catch fire.
