City of Sparks Officially Releases Name of School Shooter

One day after announcing Sparks Police would not release a name, the City of Sparks has now decided to identify the Sparks Middle School shooter.

It has released this statement:

Earlier today, during an interview covering the legality of withholding the name of the Sparks Middle School shooter, the Sparks City Attorney acknowledged the existence of an online news story by Univision.

The City Attorney's acknowledgement of the Univision news story was misinterpreted as an acknowledgment that the name of the Sparks Middle School shooter mentioned in Univision's report was correct.

Due to the widespread release of the Univision news story, and in order to be fair to the families involved and all news media, the City of Sparks confirms that the name of the Sparks Middle School shooter is: Jose Reyes.

Police say Reyes shot 45-year-old math teacher Michael Landsberry in the chest as he tried to intervene. Two other students were also shot and are both recovering from their wounds.

One of those victims, 12-year-old Mason, spoke to CNN Thursday about his experience.

To help the community heal, several vigils, community prayers and fundraisers are being held in the coming week.

The Sparks Nazarene Church will hold a community prayer Thursday night at 6:30 pm at 2200 El Rancho Drive.

The City of Sparks along with the Washoe County School District will hold a public candlelight vigil at 6pm at the Sparks Marina at the peninsula on the west side. The lighting of floating and handheld candles will begin around sunset. There is a limited supply of candles. Participants are encouraged to bring their own. Parking is also limited around the Marina. As an alternative, parking is available at the Legends at Sparks Marina.

Sparks Christian Fellowship is holding a service called 'Dealing with Tragedy and Where God Is In the Midst of it' at its 510 Greenbrae Drive location Sunday at 9am and 11am. The church will also accept donations for the victims' families.

Landsberry was a member of the Nevada Air National Guard and a Marine. McQueen High School and some military members will salute Landsberry Thursday at the 7pm McQueen home football game. The tribute and salute will happen at halftime.

An all-ages Hip Hop Halloween fundraiser party will be held Friday at Candela Nightclub at 1126 E. 4th Street in Reno. Proceeds benefit the victims of the shooting. Tickets are $10 without a costume and $5 with a costume. It's all-ages until 11pm, then 18+ after 11pm.

A fundraiser for Landsberry will be at Dad's Quick Mart at 5212 Sparks Blvd. Saturday at 10am. There will be a bake sale, car wash and a $5 raffle for $100 worth of gas. Proceeds will benefit the Compassion Fund.

The Heroes Memorial Foundation has created a Facebook Memorial Page for Michael Landsberry at https://www.facebook.com/pages/Remembering-Mr-Michael-Landsberry/767495089932653

They also have a webpage set up at http://heroesmemorial.org/content/master-sergeant-michael-landsberry

The Community Foundation of Western Nevada is hosting a fund to provide financial support to the victims, students, staff, families, and Sparks Middle School in the wake of yesterday's shooting. This fund, The SMS Compassion Fund, is accepting tax-deductible monetary donations. Disbursements will be advised by representatives of the Washoe County School District and the City of Sparks under the oversight of the Community Foundation of Western Nevada, to assure the funds are distributed to meet the needs of the school community as they are identified.
