CNN Talks With Victim of Sparks Middle School Shooting

Posted: Updated:

One of the young victims from Monday's Sparks Middle School shooting spoke to CNN Thursday about his experience.

CNN's Stephanie Elam spoke with 12-year-old Mason. He was accompanied by his mother, Jenifer David, during Thursday's interview.

Below is a transcript of that interview:

(Where were you when everything started?)

"I was by south hall."

(What did you hear?)

"A few gunshots and thought they were out in the distance."

(Oh really? You thought they were far away? So what did you do?)

"I really didn't do anything. I was confused why everybody was running."

(And then when did you encounter your classmate with a gun? How soon after you heard those first couple of shots?)

"I went to try to help Mr. Landsberry, and I went to go grab my backpack. Then I didn't grab it, because I didn't want to care about it. So the closest building.. the closest entrance was in the south hall, and that's where I was shot."

(And did you see him?)

"Yeah.."

(So did you come face-to-face with him? Did he say anything to you?)

He shakes his head no.

(He just shot you?)

He nods his head.

(How far away from you was he?)

"About 10-20 feet."

(And did you realize right away you had been shot?)

He nods his head again.

(You knew it?)

"Yeah, there was a very sharp pain in my stomach."

(Did you fall?)

"No."

(You actually stayed standing?)

He nods his head.

(What did you do?)

"After I was shot I tried to go back in the building and I ran away from him and there was another entrance at the end of south hall but it was locked. So I went to (?) and there was a secret security that helped me... told me to lay down and put pressure on my wound."

(So you put your hand over it... where exactly did you get shot?)

"Well, it went in like this and through my tissue and kind of tried to exit out, but then it went down and shot behind here."

----

"I was looking around my school and I was like, 'why is everybody running from nothing.' Then I'm like, 'oh wow,' and I saw that Mr. Landsberry got shot. He was laying on the ground unconscious. He wasn't twitching or anything and had no muscle spasms or he wasn't twitching or moving. Then my friend J.J got on his phone and called 911 to get Sparks police down to Sparks Middle School and he was like, 'we need the police... Mr. Landsberry, one of our teachers, is unconscious on the basketball court at Sparks Middle School and we need the police down here fast.'"

----

"I used to treat guns... not poorly but a little poorly because I thought they were a toy, but when I got shot, I learned that they are not just a toy. They're a weapon, and it could damage somebody very bad. So I want everybody in the world to know that wars and battles and anything dealing with weapons and guns and knives.. they are all weapons and they could kill you very easily if you hit the right spot."

----

Wednesday Davis spoke to the media outside Renown Regional Medical Center.

"Hi, I'm Jennifer Davis, mother of Mason, one of the victim's of the Sparks Middle School shooting. I'm here today to make a statement about my son and the incident.

On Monday morning, Mason was hit with a bullet to abdomen, which exited through his backside. We are happy that he is on the road to recovery and is doing well. In fact, he is already up and about. He is in good spirits, although saddened by the loss of his friend, Mr. Landsberry. We do not believe he was in any way the target in this shooting. It is my understanding that he was trying to help Mr. Landsberry at the the time he was shot.

I just need to add that as a result of this incident I will be getting involved with issues around gun safety in the hopes of preventing this kind of situation in the future.

Our whole family is grieving over the tragic deaths this week. We appreciate the support we have received from Dad's Convenient Store (sic) in Sparks and want to thank the entire community for their prayers and support during this difficult time."

A fellow unidentified student was hit in the shoulder.

His parents did not want to go camera, but they also issued a statement:

"We want to share with you that our son is doing well. He was shot through the shoulder and is recovering. He has accepted what has happened to him and is getting stronger with each passing day. We are so proud of him.

He is very sad about the death of Mr. Landsberry and feels sorry for his family. He liked Mr. Landsberry and will miss him - so will everyone at the school.

We do not believe our son was a target in this shooting. We are grateful to friends and family and everyone who has been so supportive. We request privacy for our whole family while our son is focusing on getting well. Thank you."

Police say 45-year-old Michael Landsberry was shot in the chest while trying to intervene in the situation. Police say the 12-year-old shooter killed himself. On Wednesday, Sparks City Attorney Chet Adam said that police will not release the names of the children involved in the incident, and the investigation remains ongoing.
